The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both in the UK and world-wide.

The RNOH provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, ranging from the most acute spinal injury or complex bone tumour to orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic back pain sufferers. This broad range of services is unique within the NHS.

As a national centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from across the country, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions. 

Patients benefit from a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. Consultants are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are trained and are experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care. 

The RNOH plays a major role in teaching, 20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receive training here. Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and our academic links with University College, London. Research departments at Stanmore include the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Centre for Disability Research and Innovation, the Institute of Human Performance and the Centre for Biomedical Engineering.

The RNOH works closely with other hospitals and trusts, with whom we have joint appointments to ensure maximum availability of specialist skills for patients. Our patients benefit from access to Aspire Leisure Centre which is located on site and hosts first-class facilities for able-bodied and disabled people.


An extraordinary and challenging opportunity has arisen for an experienced Medicines Adherence & Optimisation Technician to work within the multidisciplinary team in Private Care.

They will be required to demonstrate the effects of a ward based pharmacy technician and the effects on nursing time, pharmacy workload and risk management.  This will include the administration of medicines, recording on drug charts and notes as well as contributing to other medicine related duties on the ward.

We are seeking a forward thinking and highly motivated individual to deliver a high quality, safe and effective service. There is huge scope for the successful applicant to develop on both a personal and professional level through exposure to all departmental activities. This new and innovative position is new to the organisation and will involve working with a multi-disciplinary team to demonstrate any benefits of a ward based pharmacy technician. This will be done by data collection and undertaking various audits which will be used to write reports and present to a wider network.

The Pharmacy department and clinical areas have a strong focus on medicines optimisation and innovative pharmaceutical practice. This position offers exciting opportunities where they will be required to streamline ward based and pharmacy services and demonstrate any benefits.

All applicants must have evidence to verify knowledge, skills and training undertaken in their role as a pharmacy technician. The post holder will possess excellent communication skills, good interpersonal and IT skills, and ability to work independently as well as in a team on the wards and Pharmacy department.

The post holder will:

Have experience of working in a Hospital post qualification.

Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to deliver patient focused medicines optimisation through timely supply of medicines, utilisation of patients’ own medicines and medicines counselling.

Complete a competency based training programme at ward level.

Independently undertake medication administration rounds on the allocated ward(s).

Participate in medicines management, ward top-up and ward-based dispensing.

Be working as an Accredited Pharmacy Checking Technician.

To undertake a course in Education and Training to facilitate learning.

Participate in audit and research.

Through provision of an effective clinical service, this post will:

Experience of working in an NHS hospital pharmacy is essential. The post holder must hold Level 3 BTEC and NVQ in Pharmacy Services Certificate or equivalent and must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. The post holder will have undertaken the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician qualification as well as a formal Medicines Optimisation Programme.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
